The State Flag and Monument to the Sea Gull:

To their government Utah is true -
Not just state, but the federal too,
and so with great pride
they display on each side
of their flag the old Red, White and Blue.

Also famous for their industry,
Utah honors the cute bumble bee,
of which I now brag.
Center stage on their flag
is the hive of the bee….. naturally!

On Utah’s state flag is an eagle -
The symbol of peace, it is regal!
Pioneers, though, preferred,
a more interesting bird.
Why not on the flag is a seagull?

Most Utahans should know the story.
Long ago, crickets tried to destroy
the crops, till each gull
in Salt Lake ate them all!
That bald eagle has stolen gull’s glory!

Now a monument in Salt lake stands
for the sea gull, and isn’t it grand
that a bird that should be
living nearby the sea
is in love with a dry desert land!

NOTE: Came back here to say it's Pioneer Day (July 24). Utah is the only state to celebrate it. I can hear fireworks outside my house!!

Love the story and the way you told it. Side story, In the 1870's, plagues of locusts attacked the crops in Minnesota. When things seeemed hopeless, the governor declared April 26, 1877, a day of prayer. At dawn the next morning, a deep freeze set in and for several days the earth was frozen, killing the larvae underground. Thus when summer came, the fields were lush with wheat, bringing a rich harvest. I copied this from Guidepost's. Peace. :)

This is the best of Limericks Andrea. To write one would be difficult for me to manage, but all of these that tell a story...wow, this is so impressive. Gotta love the seagull! Outstanding! 7

G'day Andrea... gee, this is a great set of limericks Andrea and really informative for us who are ignorant to the facts. Seagulls in Aus are similar but only where there's water close by. Really enjoyed and thank you Andrea - Lindsay

These are priceless, Andrea. You are so great with the Limerick. I like them all for their dedication and their humor. As you know, I was born in Nebraska, grew up in Denver. Nevertheless I am a Nebraska fan living in Michigan. Michiganders probably think Nebraska's bird is the turkey vulture with a corn cobb in its beak. LOve, daver
