Notes About The Poem

Let Me In

The deep shades of night covered the earth below, and I had just laid down to finally rest my weary tired soul. But, as I slid into my bed, I heard the distant thunder roll, and then there came an insistent tapping coming from my front door.
I slowly began to open my tired, heavy eyes, and listened closely to the pounding coming from outside. I quickly rose to my feet and ran down the stairs. I swung open the door, but there was nobody there. As soon as I closed the door, I heard the sound again, and it seemed as though the awful knocking would never end.
“What do you want?” I yelled and listened with a close ear. I opened the door again, but there was still nobody there. I took a deep breath as I slammed the door. I didn’t want to hear the knocking anymore. I stood quiet for a moment and then the tapping came again.
A voice spoke soft and mild, “Won’t you let Me in?”
“Who’s there?” I called out. “Why don’t you go away?”
“Because you called upon Me to come to you today.”
“I’ve called upon no one, so just let me be.”
“Oh, but I know you did pray and ask for Me.”
My thoughts began to scramble, my mind was racing fast. I tried to remember exactly what I had asked. “Indeed, I’ve prayed today, but I called upon no man.”
“And no man stands before you, so won’t you let Me in?”
I quickly turned towards the door with tremendous fright. I pulled it opened slowly, and saw a glorious light. “Who are you?” I asked as I fell upon my knees.
“Why, you’ve known Me your entire life. Did you not ask for Me?”
“My Savior, My Lord, is it really you?”
“Indeed you now know the power of what prayer can do. For all the treasures you possess, with all your luxuries, you called out My name in your greatest time of need. You looked upon Me with blind eyes when I first came here. You listened to My knocking, but with a deafened ear. You tried to ignore the sound you heard over again, and finally you opened your heart, so won’t you let Me in?”
“Savior, are You here to take me away from my life? Is that why You’ve called upon me tonight?”
“I’m not here to bring darkness or death upon you. I’m here to shed light on all the things you do. You have achieved many things through your long years, but there is still one thing missing, that’s why I’m here.”
“Father, tell me what it is that You wish from me? I’ve got gold tucked away, shall I lay it at Your feet?”
“Your money has no value in any kingdom of Mine. A soul doused with earthly goods cannot be called divine. For all the treasure in the world the one thing you cannot buy is the eternal glory I offer when you die. Your pockets may be full of money and gold, but where you are truly empty is deep down in your soul. I’m here to offer you treasures greater than that of man, and your cup will run over if you just let Me in.”
“I’ve worked hard to obtain these things nearly all my life, and You ask me to relinquish them, is that why You’re here tonight?”
“You may be rich in numbers, but what I wish to know, is what exactly are you taking with you when it’s your turn to go? Your money stays behind, along with all your earthly things. So when you stand before the Father, what is it you will bring?”
“I am a good person, Father this you must know. I’ll bring all my charities and works when I go.”
“And yet I still stand here on the outside. If you don’t invite Me into your home, why should I invite you into Mine?”
The truth beset me quickly, for all the treasures of man cannot fulfill an empty soul the way that
Jesus can. My life was suddenly worth something so much more the moment that I answered His call and finally opened the door. He stood through my resistance. He listened when I cried, and yet all these years I left him standing on the outside. All that I had acquired didn’t matter much as I felt my soul fulfilled when I finally accepted his love. No words ever mattered more than those spoken by Him, as He tapped at my heart and asked to come in.
