I penned this humorous poem today in a sequential rhyming sequence.  It's, of course, a spoof on my original family ancestry which is half-Irish, the other half being English.  But after immigrating to America, my forebears from the 18th - 19th centuries eventually became Americans.  And so, all of us poets and lovers of poetry need an inspiration, a Muse.  Looks like by my self-admission in this poem that my inspiration, my Muse is my very good old friend:  "My Leprechaun."  To which I add, "Let all of us as poets and comrades of the written word, one day happily lift a tankard together and drink some fine Irish Whiskey in celebration of our work."  (Gary Bateman - September 9, 2014)

One dark dreary night while happily drinkin’ up a big big storm, I beheld a tiny green man in my bottle, oh!—not the norm. He’s my tiny green man in my Irish whiskey bottle. He’s my Leprechaun with whom I’d like to drink a pottle. He’s the man with a certain quaint eye twinkle and attitude, And he has all the fine alcoholic credentials and certitude, Of one who’s done much, seen much, drunk much much, And has great insight, insatiable charm, and a very deft touch. My friend the Leprechaun tells me of his present living situation: “Medrinks, Methinks, Mesleeps, Medrinks, ah!—My salvation!” I tell him my ancestry is “Half-Irish” which makes me Celtic, And he says, “Me good friend Gary, no shame, Me too Celtic!” My Leprechaun asked me of my present situation with poetry, And I says—“Medrinks, Methinks, Mewrites, Meloves poetry.” Over time I found I was mimicking more and more my little elf friend, And he says, “Me brother Gary, no worry, we both be Irish my friend.” I told my Leprechaun that he does indeed have quite an alcoholic ego, And my little elf quipped, “When we both drink Gary, I’m your alter ego!” And so, my Leprechaun in my bottle is my good friend—my adviser, And, I find that as we both drink together my poetry flows all the wiser. Thanks Cona!! Glad you liked it. This is probably why Liam McDaid (who is full Irish) and I get along so well when we do co-writes. In the poem we co-wrote on "Always a Dream" I wrote the particular passage when the Leprechaun talks to his little fairy princess. A funny ditty somewhat like this one. Best Wishes, Gary

This one was a fun write Laura. It helps to laugh at ourselves ever so often. You're right about "not the norm." If a person started seeing a little green man in his or her bottle of spirits -- it would be time to quit drinking. I enjoy the Leprechaun legends. Thanks for your comment!! Cheers, Gary

I'm glad you read this one Liam. My mother's family (named "Heflin") immigrated to America from Ireland some time in the early 19th century. While my father's family likewise immigrated to America a bit earlier from England; hence, my last name "Bateman." My love for the "Spirits" (especially Irish Whiskey) comes from my Irish side (HA HA). Cheers, Gary

Thanks Anne-Lise . . . I was sure you would comment on this one. Remember, by ancestry I really am Half-Irish so this is why the little green man is an inspiration to me, and I really do enjoy Irish Whiskey. I have to read up on "Jeppe on Bjerget (1722)." Best Wishes . . . Gary
