Lawn Mowing Wars

The thick numerous shoots of grass have come out, no more snow shovels til late autumn comes about. I hear the robins chirp as they tend their nests, wait....the sound of a cranky lawn mower chugging to life from its winter's rest! Quickly, dear, go out and mow before everyone else does! our yard needs to look perfect, 'cuz- the neighborhood spring lawn mowing wars have just begun, it's quite serious, not so much fun. Yard envy is so common in our subdivision, The HOA "Yard Of The Month" prize brings derision. If the young couple who just moved in across the street think their landscaping is the best, my roses and begonias will put them to the test. Hubby can't start the riding mower, he's cursing its parentage midst dandelions and clover. The other men in the cul-de-sac are already halfway done, as their wives bring out iced tea for them under the strong sun. Well, well, tomorrow is the neighborhood block party, I've already made an array of warm weather dishes so hearty, My potato salad and baked beans will surely be the envy of the other cooks, it is in the good 'ol American spirit- to compete and be a smug schnook! ~

Lawn envy ! Oh, is that the same as decorating at Christmas ? Gotta have the best looking house ! Seems everyone is competing, instead of actually living and enjoying moments around them. You've expressed this so well, and in such a cute and clever way. Congratulations Regina, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. :) Hugs, Brandy

Ah, the joys of home ownership. I used to have to mow the lawn at our house when I was a kid, and I did not enjoy it at all. And there was no "Yard of the Month" involved...just a dad who didn't want to do it, either. Congrats on POTD, Regina.

Thank you so much, Jim. Yes, I definitely agree with you, myself and my late husband's lawn mowing days weren't a joy either. My son-in-law uses a riding mower now where I live. Have a grand week with creativity and blessings.

We have the mad green party in Britain, they think the grass should be left to grow to save the planet. Lawnmowers have been made redundant now and medals no longer given out. Congrats on, POTD.

Thank you so much, Paul, so very kind of you to congratulate me. Many Americans take their lawns seriously here. I didn't know long grass lawns were considered the norm now in Britain for environmental reasons. Tall grass can also harbor rats and other vermin. Have a grand and creative week. :)

Dear Regina, Congrats on getting POTD! Your poem perfectly captures the suburban lawn battles and the humor in it all. I loved the playful tone and can relate because I use to mow lawns. You really nailed it! Keep up the fantastic work—can't wait to see what you come up with next. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Many congratulations dear Regina for POTD. This is such a fun read and so well written. It’s very amusing to think that neighbours compete with each other and put a smile on my face. A relative told me once that one of their neighbours was so fanatic about his lawn that he was out every day attending to it and went as far as using a pair of scissors! Loved reading this poem as it’s so witty and has great flow. Really enjoyable read. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your well deserved celebratory day

Oh, I just love the edgy tone of this, Regina. Truth. Truth. Truth!!! I remember it well, having grown up in the burbs. (Farm, village or city-dweller since age 22, thank God!). Sometimes I think these suburbanites are raising lawns instead of kids --- and with the drastic decline in babies, many of them are! (along with pampering their beloved pets). Phooey on all of it! ~ Gershon

Thank you so much, good friend. Some Americans sure are competitive. Some parents fighting with other parents at their children's sports games are the more sad examples of that. I thought I'd pen a humor poem about some folks yard obsessions, lol! Glad you like it. Have a great and creative start to your week. :)
Date: 6/2/2024 1:22:00 PM
A Fay! And congrats on the rhyme scheme, too, This poem is lyrically total fun! I suggest poets not just be an “unknown reader,” But come on now, raise the comments meter! Yes, Where I live, the HOA has prizes for front yards. But many have opted for good looking gravel and plants that need little watering since we have the water police here also! I think Newsom is cracked.

Hi Deb, my old neighborhood was pretty competitive, lol. The narrator has some of me in her, ha! I'm not competitive where I live now, my knees are arthritic. My late husband passed away 4 years ago. Glad you like the poem. Have a lovely Sunday evening. :)
