Listen to poem:

Last Man Standing

Seven times that man when down and seven times rose from the ground
Staggered forth, that last man standing with the mortar shells still landing
Every comrade gave his all; he’d seen them fight and seem them fall
For Britain’s sake each gave his life… or for children… or for wife

Not all battles
were they won
By Britain’s fathers… Britain’s sons
Though, in the mud
did those men lie
They’d fought for hope that wouldn’t die

With one grenade, in pain he races; pulls the pin at twenty paces
Carbines fail to take a rest, as bullets tear into chest
And one last time he crumples; down, to the muddied blooded ground
Labours in his final breath; makes the throw with all he’s left

Not all battles
were they won
By Britain’s fathers… Britain’s sons
Though, in the mud
did those men lie
They’d fought for hope that wouldn’t die

Now, the pillbox, smoking, stands - silenced by a hero’s hands
German soldier forward raced: Human carnage; utter waste
His view of war he speaketh not… for such a view could get him shot
He dare not state nor spark debate, that Britain always shall be great

He shakes his head… he wears no grin
He simply says……
“We cannot win!”
He shakes his head… he wears no grin
He says again……
“We cannot win!”

Not all battles
were they won
By Britain’s fathers… Britain’s sons
Though, in the mud
did those men lie
They’d fought for hope that wouldn’t die

They are the breath
That gives you voice
They are the freedom
in your choice
They’ll never die,
For goodness sake
They live in every breath you take

Thanks, Linda. I’d love the background singers(soldiers) to be chanting something legible…. Haven’t worked out how to do that yet. Terry
