Notes About The Poem

A uniquely Canadian form, the VIATOR poem form was invented by Canadian author and poet Robin Skelton. It consists of any stanzaic form in which the first line of the first stanza is the second line of the second stanza and so on until the poem ends with the line with which it began.

~ I felt very patriotic while writing this poem ~

Land of Mine

Mine is a land of golden rivers
And glowing sunsets that melt your heart 
A long history of native people in harmony 
With lush wildlife and four seasons

Rich forests covering vast expanses
Mine is a land of golden rivers
Where sockeye salmon race up rapids 
And eagles soar great heights

Cool calm breezes summoning the night
As the moon rises to cast her spell
Mine is a land of golden rivers 
That run wide from coast to coast

Maritimers greeting each morning sun
As it ascends over mountain ranges 
Caressing this topography called Canada
Mine is a land of golden rivers

John Watt May 17, 2020 at 1:06 AM I can see why this aroused such patriotic impulses within you. Your land is a beautiful one, described lovingly in this poem. "Mine is a land of golden rivers" was an apt refrain. Now I want to come visit. My father wanted to take me to the Montreal Olympics in 1976, but money was tight that year. I still have never been.
