Edward's This or That Vol. 30 Contest~2.4.25

I fear for the future of many young and innocent. The unfortunate ones whose childhood was spent without responsible parents who couldn't care less. Abandoned or runaways, alone and in dire distress of what to do. To survive they turn to a life of sin... thinking it's better than the home they were living in. On their own, using the only thing they have to barter, one prostitutes her body like a lamb to the slaughter. It's an old story about some who had a lousy childhood, parents who didn't care or who never understood that a child needs love to give them a sense of worth. Many were given away within days of their birth. Others, fleeing a home in which they'd been abused is a common reason teenagers often become confused. And another innocent baby bird, from the nest has flown walking the streets, lost and left to make it on her own. Lips painted scarlet red... in a hooker's shoes she walks, lamb to the slaughter while the lascivious wolf stalks. Little Girl Lost, whose flesh was once as white as snow, allows herself to be used by Tom, Dick, John and Joe. Langston Hughes has labeled her, "...a withered flower on a broken stem." * Stilettoes pacing hour after hour, just so she can eat. A lamb to quench a predator's thirst, she's among the flock on the corner of Gutter and 21st. *'Young Prostitute' by Langston Hughes

Beautifully composed piece, Lin. Heartiest congratulations on your podium win in my contest. I love your take on the theme. I'm a huge Langston Hughes fan, but I've never read "Young Prostitute". Thanks for introducing me to this poem of his.

Brilliant poem Lin, so many reasons explored as to how these unfortunate souls end up on the corner of Gutter and 21st, every city has at least one such corner, strange thing though, a lot of the people using their (services) are very wealthy also high and mighty, in complete contrast with the prey! I wish you all the best in contest, cheers David

Streets of ill repute... what an old fashioned cliche' and far too many young people find themselves walking them to exist in a cruel world. Yep, the rich sleazeballs drive up in a fancy car and pay for the services. Makes my skin crawl. Thanks for the well wishes in the contest.

Lin, I think you hit the mark. A child deserves and needs love from the beginning. Without that, a pattern of destructive thoughts may be "burned" into the brain and it will be almost impossible to repair this condition. This is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. People searching for affection or acceptance and who don't have a sense of self worth will often be unable to cope, understand meaningful relationships, or avoid damaging thoughts and behavior. You nailed it with your insightful poem.

Hi Duke and how are you? I didn't want to take the religious route on a lamb being led to the slaughter. Metaphorically, this one crossed my mind and went for it. Thanks for reading and your great thoughts.

Lin, you've woven the tale of these circumstances in such a poetically beautiful way! Such a sad situation indeed and a commentary on the darker side of humanity!! Good luck xxoo

It really is a darkness that envelopes far too many young people, of both genders. Thanks ever so much, Mike,

This was so heartfelt to read Lin. You did a marvelous job in sharing such a tragic moment for these children that like you say were abandoned and not loved. It is the world we live in and it is disgusting. I pray for these lost souls and hope they can be rescued and redeemed. this one is a favorite because it is a shocking truth that makes you cringe at what is happening everyday in our major cities. Thank you for sharing it was a rude awakening that we all must face and deal with, and find

Thank you so very much for your detailed remarks, Michael. I always appreciate your take on my poetry. This is a sorrowful topic, but I wanted to choose one that wasn't expected for this theme. You were missed... hope all is well with you.
