I didn’t understand short form haiku when I first started writing. (I’ve grown.) Once I learned the traditional form, I started writing the modern shorter versions. Haiku does not translate into other languages into the same syllable counts. It’s freeing to get the sentiment across by using the least amount of words necessary. Many poets now use very little syllables. I tend to stick to around 9-11 (minimum) syllables total instead of “traditional” 17 without going over 17. If it’s less than 9 syllables total, it’s typically a senryu or other form of haiku/micropoetry when I write. That’s just my preference. Jack Kerouac is a good example of setting yourself free to play w/haiku.

“Modern” as in this day and age of the internet which includes micropoetry and haiku forms that poetry fits within 140-280 character limits for social media platforms that are often immediately translated into other languages. Not as in the “modern movement” poetry history. I’ve been writing poetry for years and have several blogs. This haiku is fashioned in the format that is very popular on Twitter as well as GooglePlus as well as blogs that I follow. (R.I.P. G+) I lived in Okinawa, Japan for 8-years. Therefore, I am familiar with many Japanese art forms. I made the statement above for the people who are learning haiku that are probably wondering why this haiku doesn’t fit in traditional format just like I did when I was learning.

Your haiku is amazing; it shows a tender spirit, indeed.
