Kola Tears (Death of a Pet)

Her face with liquid eyes of brown,
trusting upon my arm lies down.
My fingers gently stroke velvet ears.
She looks at me and shows no fear.
I place a kiss between her eyes,
she licks my face one last time.

As her eyes slowly close,
rhythm of breathing starts to slow.
Stethoscope placed against her heart.
Those words "She's gone now" miles apart.
My tears flow strong, free, unchecked.
It's a decision I'm still not over yet.

Paula, my wife and I had a half lab -- half chow mix that ran the streets with during our addict days and after we settled down and bought our home we had to put him too sleep. I guess some pains never fade, I love your poem - YF4L, God Bless, mj

It's really tough to make the decision to let go, Paula. People say we shouldn't let animals suffer, but our pain is so great when we have to lose them. The reader can see everything happening so well through your words. Best wishes for the contest. Love, Carolyn

If this is true, also so sorry. Seems too realistic not to be. Know these moments. Portrayed well.

Oh...if this is true, (which I'm guessing it is)...I am so sorry, Paula. It is one of the hardest decisions....I have been in that place, and it is humane, but heart breaking regardless of being the right thing to do. Well expressed in your poem.
