Knowing My Place
You ask if I know my place
And I smile a knowing smile
I raise my hand to your cheek
And caress it for a while
So many dreams I’ve dreamt of
Places that I’d like to see
So many plans I’ve crafted
To reach the apex of “me”
Yet, I live in your shadow
I'm content to let you shine
For if you reach noble heights
Your successes will be mine
We're not a simple twosome
We are not a "you and I"
Rather, one whole entity
Together we sink or fly
You ask if I know my place
I’m a mother, lover, wife
A teacher and a preacher
I love my domestic life
I know that the time will come
To spread my own wings and fly
My sweet dreams of being great
Will unfold, dear, by and by
I WILL write a book of rhymes
One day all my dreams will live
But right now my place is here
Your woman, my love to give!
