Kings and Castles -

Everyone had a unique reason for playing the Game
as we find different means for surviving Life
until the proper seconds of Death come stomping by with insistence,

some want intellectual respect shown with agitation in the opponent's eyes,
others crave the anxiety of prognostication
like gladiators uncertain of how to strike,
people commence the battle because they have something to prove
as Bobby boldly reproved the Soviets
on their asinine assumptions of superiority,

regardless, all who touch the Board want desperately
to understand the Game,
it's rituals, it's spirits,
the possibilities alive & haunting the 64 squares,
to honestly provide a homage of mind to History and to invention,
as if the nature of Chess is a dream of God's,
a subconscious engineering of grappling wants & needs,
of fears & hopes, of bravado & caution,
32 weapons arranged handsomely for the express channeling
of the Divine creative compulsion of Providence itself,

geometry made grand & gallant,
a homicide for Honor performed in the pressure of an hour,
all skilled players realise at some point
that quality brinksmanship ascends over the voice of victory
and can be reduced to the amazing beauty
of integrating logical processes with artistic allure,
misdirection a linchpin of the Master's ancient algebra,
momentum the indispensible monarch of strategy,
without It One is dictated,
mating nets, positional play, tactical moves,
a temple devoted to timeing -

My father is a great chess player. He loves the challenge. He also loves to play Stratigo...Do you know the game? It has army personnel and hidden bombs...the object is to capture the flag. Oh...it takes great wisdom to play this game....to capture the queen....to check mate with finesse...early in the game. I'm hopeless at this game...just most of the times...a pawn. ;) Love your writes, Justin. Love the power and wisdom and underlying sensuality in it all.

Oooo....I get turned on by the Game Stratego Eileen. The Queen, weapon of awe with the slightest move, so many positions for her to exercise her power. A woman like you moves pawns, then again, there is no other woman like you. You and I very similiar in many ways. I love your mind. J.A.B.

Thanks alot Shaodow, I'm happy that I was capable of honoring the great game and art of chess, and the great Bobby Fischer too, in the larger message of this composition. J.A.B.

A great man once said, in a truly American way, " never give up baby, never give up..." you may really enjoy the success story of a woman named Ronda Rousey, shes a fierce champion, like you Linda. Her story, like yours, really gets me amped!!!!!! J.A.B.

Well, every great challenge or worthwhile game we choose to play in life is an exercise in survival... the use of Chess as a metaphor is fantastic :)

A classic metaphor indeed Karen, and thus a great artistic and intellectual challenge for my mind - my writing career would be incomplete if I did not pay homage to this legendary game - J.A.B. %

Really awesome poem here! My uncle is an exceptional chess player--as such an exceptional poem about the game. This is different and truly rewarding to read. Always, Laura

Thank you veery much Laura - I'm elated that a young woman appreciates this Game and metaphor - chess is primarily an Art Form, competition and careers that ensue are simply amusing - J.A.B. %
