Keepers of Day and Night
From the sublime blue
He, having done his work
Tired and sweating
Sank into the west sea
To have a lave
At the gong of six.
It began to darken
Without the presence of him.
And people and animals
Hurried to their homes.
With darkness filled
And mist hung
It was stilly
With no motion.
Then after a movement in the clouds
It began to lighten
As there came the keeper;
Keeper of night.
She was round then,
And she shone bright
Which made the owls
Hoot with delight.
And I, from my window-sill
Kept still in wonder.
