yes, I agree about deep thinking poetry. There is a difference between making people think deeply and being just a big mess of confusion!

You lean my way, Carole. I do not like poetry that makes me puzzle and puzzle about what it means. I know some friends of mine who prefer this kind but thankfully the world is filled with many types of poets and readers of poetry and I think more of them fit in OUR category! Great poem!

Hi, Andrea. I think some people write whatever comes to mind whether it makes sense or not. And even if it doesn't they write it anyway because they believe that poetry is supposed to be a mystery. Some poetry does make you think deeply and that can be good. That is not what I'm talking about. To each his own though. Writing can be a great emotional outlet but I always try to put myself in the reader's shoes. That is THE test IMO. Thanks, Carole.

Your Limerick sends a simple straightforward message, Carole. Coming across new words does not bother me; what bothers me is coming across a poem which is too abstract for my intelligence! I vote for simplicity and clarity. ~ Regards // paul

Thanks for your "vote", Paul. I love language and learning new words but it's important that a word makes sense in the context of the poem. I really want "my" poetry to be easily read and enjoyed by anyone. It probably comes from my working with children and adults who struggle with reading and who have the misconception that ALL poetry is impossible to understand. I want to spread the LOVE of poetry.

Thanks for being such a "good sport" Carole- your reply helped me understand better what you were putting across. I've got a lot of "old jargon" stuck in my head from the old books I used to read. Some of the words I've come up with were "literally " there in the first place. I'm so glad you didn't delete my comment, and appreciate your reply very much! I've taken your poem to heart...And you're welcome to point out words in my poems that don't seem to fit- good critique always helps! : D

As a child, I read everything from comics to war poetry, from children's stories to "grown up" books. So for myself, everything from monoku, which can be quite brilliant in simplicity, to poems with layers of complexity, that make me reach for a dictionary, are a feast for a thirsty mind. We are permitted , with respect, to choose what we read, I never felt forced to read any poet's work, and not commenting, doesn't mean they're not read either. Great poets wrote lesser poems too. Warm regards!

Well, Aqua, I love learning new words too and since I've been on PS I've learned many. What bothers me is when they don't fit in with the context of the poem and seem to be used just for some kind of superfluous effect or nonsensical rhyme. Personally, I actually enjoy "deep" poetry sometimes...IF it makes sense. Otherwise, it's just wordy IMO. Thanks for commenting. Carole :D

So true Carole, so then what am I? I love simple poems with lots of emotion, and.. I also love deep intellectual writes that need some interpretation, I guess to each their own!

Yes, John, I understand and...me too! "To each their own" for sure. I like all kinds of poetry too as long as the poem in question actually makes sense and CAN be interpreted and if there are rhymes included they too must actually FIT the poem and are not used simply to rhyme for rhyme's sake Does that make sense? lol Thanks for your comment. Carole :D

Poetry is subjective Carole, that is the beauty of it... We all have our likes and dislikes, as long as we respect each other, that is the important thing..

Thanks for including my limerick in your collaboration, Jan, and I like to write "simply" because I really want anyone to be able to understand my poetry because when an ordinary person reads a poem that is complicated who is there to explain or help them analyse it? And, many don''t take the time to look up words they don't know. I realize that's their problem...not the writer's but personally I want to spread the love of poetry which I don't think is very likely if we write in such a way as to confuse and/or confound our readers. That's why I like to KISS too. lol Carole :D
