Justice For George
In Honor of George Floyd and the innocent lives stolen before and after him… -God Bless the family of George Floyd -From my heart to yours…Meghan C. Hutchings
A façade of armor hiding the weak Lost followers with arrogant voice Excessive force and violence speak As ignorance guides evil choice… How dare these bias and cowardly men Abuse power and dictate one’s fate How dare these few minds fearless of sin Mock equality and justice with hate? To serve and protect, as most officers do Their commitment to all humankind Black and white-skinned, brown, mixed, any hue Human treatment should be colorblind. Open your eyes, beyond your own pride Skin colors, mixed and united, you see Yet it’s dark-skinned people whose rights are denied As fools equate race with one’s dignity. Have you ever looked deep, beyond color and race Into the hearts, dreams, ambitions, and goals For history, sadly, cannot be erased But the lessons we’ve learned can mend souls… As a writer and teacher, with skin pale and white Black history, heroes, the need to reform I’ll write and forever teach my students to fight For silence is a coward’s platform. Beyond broken, my heart cries for each soul Who, by ignorance, their precious life taken To their families, I yearn to replace what they stole Your loved one will never be forsaken. If I had room, I’d list every name Of all innocent blacks who have been killed “Justice for George!” is my current proclaim. Until then, this world won’t be still. The country is mourning; no one can deny Justice lingers…no one can avoid Rest with your mother; breathe as we cry God bless you for changing the world, GEORGE FLOYD!
--With Love…Meghan *I will repost this poem so that you will never be forgotten…

Meghan, yours is an incredibly valuable voice for racial justice and equality. In June 2020 there was a contest in the wake of the George Floyd tragedy, called "I Can't Breathe"... I'm wondering if you were here on Poetry Soup back then. If not, I encourage you to read some of the amazing poets here... https://www.poetrysoup.com/poetry/contests/i_cant_breathe_13673

My dear friend, John, my inspirational mentor, I did not know about the contest, but I was deep into my feelings at the time, so I was definitely inspired to write. I also wrote a tribute to Rep. John Lewis from the Senate when he passed. I wanted to share my words with the world, but have no connections in that respect. Maybe someday! For now, it brings me comfort that you, along with others, are able to enjoy & appreciate my messages. Thank you for continuing to inspire me! God bless & much love...Meghan!

Although I truly enjoyed your poem in its entirety, Meghan, this particular line stood out for me: "silence is a coward’s platform." May I never be silent in the face of bullying and injustice.

Thank you very much for reading this poem and taking the time to comment so kindly! You chose one of my favorite lines, as well! Even if people are not yet willing to outwardly do a lot, just speaking up against injustice is a start! I love your powerful statement at the end! You are man of excellent character, from what I can tell! Much love, Meghan.

Meghan, this is such a powerful and moving memorial to George Floyd and the countless other victims of racial injustice and police brutality. Thank you for writing and sharing, and may we all do our part to bring about reform and justice, and to never forget the victims. "For silence is a coward’s platform." Keep writing and inspiring! Merry Christmas ~ John

John, thank you very much for your beautiful & kind response to my poem! I am so touched that you found the message powerful, as that was my goal. I can never claim to fully empathize with the pain felt by these victims and their families, but I will always strive for equality in a world where that continues to be a struggle. Merry Christmas, John! Thank you for motivating me to keep writing! God bless you! -Meghan
