Just Thinking

Ever sit and ask yourself “Who am I?”
in the grand scheme of things?
was I always meant to be--
     the product of generations
of people I will never know?

Ever sit and ask yourself “Am I alone”
is it all a figment of my imagination
and I, too, shall someday pass away?

Ever sit and ask yourself “Why am I here?”
in this place, at this time,
is there something I should be doing?
some place I really need to go?

Why do we love this life so much
and are so afraid of dying?
What do we see at the end of the road
for this transient lifetime of trying?

...and are so afraid of dying? I think most of us fear suffering more than dying--even those who believe this is all there is. Your poem poses questions we ask but are never answered. Nice poem, Milton. Congratulations!

Why do we love this life so much, and are so afraid of dying? Now that's the million-dollar question, methinks. I think that the answer is that we are so materialistic AND so faithless that we think that this world is the end of the journey. ~ Just sayin,' gw
