Notes About The Poem

Just Be You

"To thine own self be true."*
No matter what else you do....
this truth will get you by
Look others in the eye
With sureness take a stand
Your life at your command
Be true to what you say
No pretense in your way
Be proud of who you are
Let knowledge bear you far

Reach up to glowing sky
And if you laugh or cry
Stand up if you should fall
Be true to inner call
If others prove untrue
and leave you feeling blue
With self you'll be at rest
You've done your very best

"To thine own self be true"
To others just be YOU!

Eileen Manassian

*In Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Polonius said this to Laertes, his son, before he set off to France.

Charity begins at home....and that is why it is important that we be true to ourselves first and foremost. People who wear disguises and masks have something to hide. An honest message, indeed, Eileen. hugs // paul

To be true to myself. I try to work on that a lot Eileen , even if what the others see , they wouldn't like in me, I still stay true to me, cuz truth will set me free. : ). Love the message in your poem dear Eileen. It speaks volumes to me.

Excellent and inspiring write. To be true to one's ownself, not being dictated by others' perception, listening to our inner voice. Not easy but worthwhle...

Yes...dear. It is not easy, Nandita...but, in the end...dependence on self...love for self...and respect for self...will be what will get each person through to the other side. :) Thanks, dear...for your beautiful spirit.

This is a great take-away message, Eileen. It's a lot of work trying to pretend, and only causes stress for everyone involved. It's especially degrading to find that people liked the person you pretended to be more than the real you ... so just being oneself always, is the best advice.

Pretense is never my strong point, Timothy. Even though at times...social settings call for it. People pretty much know where they stand with me. I'm very aware of my own shortcomings and weaknesses. It breaks me at times, but I figure....no one is baggage free. Some are just more honest about admitting it than others....Thanks for the visit. Hugs

It is...but when it's all said and done....if you aren't true to yourself...you can't be true to anyone else. Thanks for the visit, dear.
