It's Hard To Be a Rhymer In a Free-Verse World

The "Rhymers" guild; archaic faction,
We garner all the more detraction
Less, are we, in our attraction
More, we are, the poetic infraction

When free is verse, a form accursed-
Murders Art, fetch forth a hearse
For they coerced the Poems reverse,
And left our lines inverse- perverse!

*Title is a play off "It's Hard to be a Diamond in a Rhinestone World"

It is such a shame that we "rhymers" are becoming extinct. Since rhyme is the foundation that poetry was built on. As more and more poets are opting for free verse these days, authors like Stephen King could be considered poets! However, there are a few "rhymers" out there like myself, who are still keeping the tradition alive! Great work, BP! I loved it! :)

Bravissimo, Tac. Where's the fun and challenge in blogging then breaking the sentences up to make them even-lined, ignoring rhythm? I'd much rather read cleverly crafted rhythm-and-rhyme poetry and be transported a thousand miles than slog through a blog dubbed "free verse" with "Thesaurus" written all over it. "Verse" my foot. They're simply shortened lines. To each his own, I suppose. Hey, good rhythm-and-rhyme you've got going here. Well done, my friend. Licia :-)

Great point! I do enjoy the freedom free verse gives, but a great deal of my work is in Rhyme! ROCK ON!!! Great poem here! :)

Thanks, Eileen. I have been experimenting more with free-verse and narrative styles, but rhyme will always be the superior form of expression in my book :)

I do not know why some publishing editors look down on rhyme when rhyme can sound so beautiful to the ear and when not every poet has the ability to rhyme.Excellent post.

Thanks, Charmaine. I guess they just think it's too "archaic" and we "rhymers" are bringing nothing "new" to the poetic table, as I was once told. Oh, well...lol ;)

I would add, "hard to be a rhymer in the publishing world" since all they clamor for in the snob magazines are free verse. I actually adore both forms, but I think it's a crime that rhyme today is looked down on by the eggheads. Nicely done!
