It Is for the Best

When love comes to an end, it does not always fail—
sometimes it simply finishes its duty.
The ground we stood on grows thin,
and staying would mean sinking together.

We lower our flags without ceremony,
no drums, no final charge,
just the quiet discipline of knowing
this battlefield will take more than it gives.

Once, we shared rations of laughter,
stood back-to-back against the dark.
Now our maps disagree,
and every step forward is a different direction.

There is honor in retreat.
In leaving the armor where it lies,
in saluting what was fought for,
and refusing to turn memory into an enemy.

So we walk apart—not defeated,
but wiser in the aftermath—
carrying no prisoners, no curses,
only the hard-won peace of survival.

"There is honor in retreat. In leaving the armor where it lies, in saluting what was fought for, and refusing to turn memory into an enemy." What culled wisdom! Love this stanza.
