Notes About The Poem

Into the New Year

We carry them into the new year...

the heartaches we didn't heal
the pain we chose not to feel
the harsh words we couldn't unspeak
the ones we belittled, made weak

We carry them into the new year....

all the burning anger and hate
the love hunger we didn't sate
the brokenness we did not mend
while making a foe of a friend

We carry them into the new year...

Before these hours tick away
Hear my advice; do what I say
make amends and start anew
Pay each one what he is due

Forgiveness or friendship sweet
Offer it as a loving treat
Start the new year with this in mind
Your kinder self you need to find

Move beyond past rivalry
Look deep into eternity
For this year may be your last
Leave the pain there in the past

I'll surely try if you will too
New Year Wishes to make come true
Leave the hurt outside the door
Pass inside; there's love in store

I meditated for New Years: pictured a large, white, glossy box and one by one put everything as mentioned in your poem, inside it. I imagined the most beautiful hands reach down from above and take it up, up and away to let go and let God. It worked and I am blessed. As are you. I enjoy reading you poems very much, Eileen.
