Notes About The Poem

Inside a Crack

Inside a crack, a rose has grown
here in the sidewalk! All alone,
it poses with its pretty face
in this most unusual place,
its origin to me unknown.

How was this flower ever sown?
Was there a seedling that got blown
somehow into this tiny space
                                            inside a crack?

This one strong rose which on its own
took root as if it sprang from stone
reminds me how in life’s quick pace
can still be found small signs of grace
where courage sprouts – as I’ve been shown -
                                            inside a crack!

It is amazing how grass and other wild things can come up in those seems in parking lots, on highways, and on expressways. If only we could get the good to grow in our yard or flowerbeds and the bad to remain in the wild somewhere. Enjoyed reading your contest entry. Reads like a good contender. Thanks for the visits to my page. Sara

Beautiful, Andrea, it reminds me of the Victor Frankel story about being in a concentration camp. There is always a glorious goodness somewhere, if you search hard enough and a sign of grace such as that beautiful rose.
