The Native Americans in the U.S. shared their knowledge of growing crops, saving seeds, and their planting techniques with the European settlers, keeping them alive. To celebrate their generosity and willingness to help the Pilgrims stay alive, we celebrate Thanksgiving, giving thanks to God for the harvest, and for the Native Americans who kept the European settlers alive by sharing food and knowledge with them.

The Native Americans did not believe in "owning land". They shared it with everybody, thinking it all belonged to everyone. The Europeans who came over, wanted to "own" the land. They did whatever trick, lie, and fraudulent act to force the Native Americans to give up the most desirable lands.  In a final act of cowardice and meanness, the Europeans distributed blankets laced with smallpox to the Native Americans. This killed them off in frightening large numbers.

Dream catcher made of turtle shell
Elemental magic, soul bringer, dream walker
Enlightens papoose, savoring his knowing smile.

Grandfather Shaman feeds the fire
Whose pleasure to warm is well-known in teepees.
Tribal spirit faeries hide in furs

Braves will return tomorrow
Hopefully from a good hunt.
Innocent ones sleep soundly,
Unworried, on small pox blankets.

This is a beautiful ode to Native American culture, it is so tragic how they were treated-

I always used to root for the Native Americans, knowing in my soul that they were the good guys, not always the cowboys.
