Ineffable

The sound of rain falling on your roof,
feeling raindrops on your flesh...ineffable--

The tightness of a hug from one you have
not seen for a very long time...ineffable--

Laughter of young children playing, yours
or not, doesn't matter...ineffable--

The way a sunrise gives you hope, and a
sunset presages a peaceful death...ineffable--

The touch on your neck by your beloved,
the quiet sharing of doing nothing...ineffable--

The awakening from a dream full of wonders,
the sense you were in another world...ineffable--

The moment of joining with another human being,
the strange mixture of joy and sadness...ineffable--

Beholding a tree in full bloom, its myriad leaves
turning in the wind, whispering life...ineffable--

The quiet, secret, almost desperate longing
for transcendence, for God... ineffable....

Nicely done, L.J., everything leading up to the clincher, to G-d, the ultimate in ineffability, if you will. … A crazy, stray thought: Somehow, it seems as if you could substitute "Ineffable" for "Unforgettable" in the song of that same name by Nat King Cole---and it would work! ... Great poem!! :) gw

Thanks Gershon-- I'm quite pleased by the comparison with one of the great songs of all time.

Ineffable is a word I do not think I ever used in a poem. I even looked it up to know its meaning and wow, this poem really tells it like it is!!! This is such good writing. a FAVE for me. I don't know which contest you won, but Congratulations on a well deserved place.

Thanks Andrea-- I never used it before either but as I put more time in, in 'this' life, I become more aware that there may be a greater Reality beyond-- and within-- this reality of time and space.

Thank you, Kevin! Four times! Even I don't read them that many times! I really appreciate the feedback--it is one of the myriad unseen miracles in our Universe when one soul can 'talk' to another.

A definition worthy to be placed in the OED.

Thank you Geoff (though I own the OED and that thing is too damn heavy already!)
