In Vietnam

I had just turned eighteen, when the order came. For long as I live, I’ll never be the same; I was told that day I was going away, To Vietnam. I remembered that day, as my feet hit the ground, As all around me came the sound, Of the guns and screams, In Vietnam. Our leader ordered us to the trees, Where everyone got on his knees, To try and destroy the enemy, In Vietnam. We tried to stand, but the odds were too great, And so we retreated before it was too late. The fight continued another day, In Vietnam. We marched through forest, swamp and marsh, Through weather fair, and weather harsh. We endured a living hell, In Vietnam. Friends were made and friends were lost, The freedom we have came at their cost. The price of war is often high, but not like that Of Vietnam. A hero’s welcome, I thought, for sure; But nothing was farther from what I endured When I got back From Vietnam. The price we paid was soon forgot, For peace and ignorance is what was sought. The truth died there, In Vietnam.

To the contraire, many people tend to downplay and even forget the Vietnam War, because it was not a Romantic escapade. They remember only that it was a fiasco. Despite the lack of resolve of our leaders, these men fought bravely. They never lost a battle, and would not have lost the war, if Nixon's carpet bombing campaign had begun in earnest at the beginning of the war. Remember, the Iraq war started the same way. Incrementalism gave way to surges, and we won the war!
