Notes About The Poem

Written 5 March 2026 for 1449 March Posted Poems Poetry Contest of Brian Strand

In the Quietude of the Night

the moon ascends
          a silent silver shining disc
 illuming the world
           with a velvet drape

the busy chatter
           of the day recedes
shaping solemn silent quietude
            where the spirit wakes
a lamp burns low
             upon the wooden desk
a small defiant sparkle
             against the dark

here I am stripped
            of all the daily masks
casting a role unseen, unknown
             by curious, wondering eyes

seated down erect in my room
in the quietude of the night
with the mind free from thoughts
	    turning round and round
the spirit focussing
	   on the inner self
with only the breath drawn in
            and then letting it go
I feel a tranquillity, a peace
a solace, a sense of bliss
unknown before
              a simple rhythm
untying me to all

all woeful worries waxing
            during shine of the day
all stinging strains stretching
             their tentacles during daylight
now shrink to dust
             in the solemn quietude
where stars like distant shining bulbs
             gaze through the undrawn curtains
of the welcoming window panes

I feel the press of vastness
            all around me
in my room and beyond
with silence speaking some sweet words
to me with palpable swirls
           of the cosmic wheel

 my hurried pace of life
            finds deep refreshing rest
like a tiny ripple
           in an endless sea
with the searching heart
             laying down its heavy load
of questions softened
            losing their sharpest edge

perhaps the answer
           resides not in speech
but in this yielding
             to the quietude
a sense of order
             hidden and unseen
reasserting itself
             in silent grace
where the soul remembers
             what the daylight hides,
the thread that binds
              to the Truth.
