In Comes Autumn
In the abundance and bounty of our fruited land
my thankful heart overflows with gifts given with love
In the sight of the harvest moons bright helping hand
I feel the root of natures’ essence singing loud from above
played from the equinox on strings by the masters’ band
In shadows short face, black on hallowed ground
earlier comes the presence of these deep ebon nights
In spider webs glistening in fields, to see what is found
while later to rise is the morning, soft mellow lights
so now it is I who am up ‘ere the birds’ chirping sound
In the smell of the gardens tilled freshly asunder
brilliant yellow marries orange with vows from bold red
In bilious clouds holding forth the grand noise of thunder
Autumn is ever upon us when leaves give up their dead
and by fistfuls swirl gaily, dancing in blithe silly wonder
In geese as they honk noisily, heading south over my head
I know summer has come to its yearly ancient demise
In the icy frost as it covers the land like a delicate bedspread
and I hear pumpkins and ghouls send out their eeriest cries
Autumn is sewn dramatically in its’ golden laced thread
