Imagination

When I was young
just a bright eyed child
Magic meshed with imagination
Both mystical and wild

Fairytale kingdoms
Colourful real
The grey world outside me
Held such little appeal

I rode metallic moonbeams,
Lassoed shooting stars
Collected turquoise oceans
in my mason jars

My best friend was a monkey
King Bongo ruled my toys
Although small in stature
I was somehow more than other boys

Nothing seemed impossible
I travelled at the speed of thought
Everything wasn’t what it was
And some things were what they were not

I rushed to grow up
Yes it’s true
It seems boys often do
Still my friend I have a secret
I might have kept from you

When I close my eyes
Imagination reappears
I travel back to yesterday
and all those years they disappear.

I want to play & make a fort. What should I put inside? Your poem gives me ideas. Remember Spirograph or Operation? iPads in little hands. Kids would be so much better off using "their imagination" They don't know fun while their brain cells develop. Your poem brought me to the good parts of my childhood, when we climbed trees and impressed our friends with belly flops into the lake. A sad goodbye to Hide & Seek and pink tummies :(

Loved the optimism through your words. My favorite line was, “ Collected turquoise oceans in my mason jars.” Wonderful, SuZ

This is an awesome depiction, Richard. Realistic images of past bring to fore childhood and much more.

Oh my, this is a heartwarming write, dear Richard.. Those childhood days were the best when our thoughts travelled like lightyears and nothing could limit our imagination. When everything magical and mystical held a magnificent place in our realities and "The grey world outside held such little appeal" So rightly said.. There's so much nostalgia and soulful depth in this poem and I can connect with it too.. "metallic moonbeams", "Fairytale kingdoms" And that ending.. Loved reading this, a FAV
