This verse, like many of my others, just plays on the words of an idiom or saying, in this case "take my ball (the poem) and go home." Other verses where I do that are "driving the meaning of something (the poem) home," "not being able to see the (her) forest for the trees," "being wishy washy," "buttoning your lip," "dilly dallying," etc. It's a goodt way to write some really silly poems!
"If you won't play nice, I'm taking my poem home."
"Oh, poor baby! Look! He can't take it, Jerome."
"Don't! I swear! If you spray it with that fizzy foam,
I'm taking my poem home."
"So, take it home," sass Billy and Jerome.
"We don't give a rat's ass about your stupid little poem!"
