If This is America

If this is America,
All I’ve been taught,
As a student in school
Or in life, adds to naught.

If this is America,
Fairness and truth
Are mere follies we bandy
About in our youth.

If this is America,
Bullies may rule,
With justice expected
By only a fool.

If this is America,
Decency’s out,
For power and flattery’s
What it’s about.

If this is America,
So much is wrong
That all I can think is
That I don’t belong.

The same words cold be written about Biden or Harris by many a Trump supporter. Neither side hears, understands or respects the other, which is the problem -- and thank you, Media! In my opinion, it all started with the media. The media is the madman!!

You have expressed the feelings of many with your heartfelt poem. I, too, wonder if I belong in a country that could choose such a deplorable man to lead it for the next four years. Will the country I proudly served survive this indignity? We must continue to raise our voices whenever there is injustice and defend those that are treated unjustly. Let's keep faith with our fellow Americans who rejected the hate and lies.

Thank you for this supportive comment, Jan! Although he won half the country’s votes, I guess there are the other half of us who are outraged by the outcome. Let’s hope we can turn it around, although I’m not too hopeful right now…

I think there’s a lot of people sharing your consternation, Ilene. Weirdly… we seem to have both had an ‘If’ moment. Enjoyed yours, even if you’d rather have no need to have written it. Terry

Thank you, Janis! It’s great to connect with some like-minded people at this time. It definitely helps a bit. Let’s hope things aren’t as scary as they now appear…

This is still America, it has not changed and it's constitution has not changed either. Majority of the Americans have not changed because America is a patriarchal society. It is not ready for a woman to govern the country.

Kamala is correct, but I feel like the light of America has been very much dimmed in the last few months. Thanks for the comment, Anaya…(I wish Rico were here to add his two cents!)

Hey Jan! It’s amazing to me that non-Americans can see the truth about this man much clearer than at least half of the American public…

I know the feeling. Last night I followed virtually all of the reporting and fairly early I knew, with sinking hopes, what was the probable outcome, although I found it hard to believe. We must grit our teeth, stand up straight, and never give in or allow ourselves to be bullied, manipulated or to join all of those who have no abiding loyalty to nor concern for the freedoms, liberty, and democratic ideals that are embodied in the constitution. Courage, Ilene.

Well said, Leo Larry! I feel a bit better knowing there are others out there who feel the same way I do. Thanks for reaching out…

Well, Ilene, try to keep the faith and believe that this, too, will pass. Hopefully, some of us will survive.
