If Only

If you could go back in time
just for a day not a lifetime

The choices limitless, yet
these are the words I hear--

"If only I could..."

See my beloved parents
tell them what I didn't say

Become the person I wanted to be
virtuous, kind, gentle, free

Talk to Abraham Lincoln or JFK
pray with Martin L. King, Jr.

Be an innocent child again
squishing toes in mud

Relive my wedding day
the love, lust, joy

Hold my newborn in my arms
feel again heartfelt bliss

If only we could relive
the endless consequences
that control our lives

Hear the lovely promises made
My lover told me once
"If only I could reach the rainbow,
pull it down and give it to you,"

now he is forever lost

If only....
