Notes About The Poem

If I Were An Elephant

If I were an elephant I’d fly to safety in a jumbo jet I’d visit my mum in a zoo, as she lives in darkest Tibet I’d have to pack up my belongings in an enormous trunk If there are beds on the plane I’d sleep in the top bunk On second thought, that’s not such a sensible idea My huge tummy gets queasy, I could shoot from my rear! Aircraft seats are tiny and couldn’t fit my enormous tush To be honest I prefer to stay in my habitat in the African bush But sadly it’s no longer safe for me to remain in my home Man is after my ivory tusks, across the plains they roam Many of my relations have died at their murdering hands It’s such a tragedy we can’t be secure in our homelands So if I were an elephant I’d want to be left in peace For my habitat to be safe and for all killing to cease If I were an Elephant Contest Sponsored By Mystic Rose 12~11~16

Nice humor but also sad that warped humans are killing these magnificent creatures for, in most cases for money, in others for wrong reasons. Congratulations on your win. / M

:-( Sadly, the bigger they are, the easier they fall. But... if you were an elephant, I'd be a bee//together we'd swim through this life, this foul sea//with laughter and hugs//we'd drive off bad bugs//and I'd sting those damn hunters with glee. (remind me not to stand behind you when you "shoot from your rear!!!) huggagiggles ~ j

I love how you mixed a little humor into this humorless subject. You, "Elephant's point of view" brings light to the topic and a little sadness to my heart thinking about it. Humans can be so cruel.

Destruction of elephant's (or any animal's) habitat is a crime, and man has already committed and still commits so many crimes. Good luck in the contest, Jan.

Hi Jan I just love you for your sentiments about elephants. I mirror it too. I do live in the bush and Africa is a visciously cruel place. They "harvested" a rhino horn down the road the other day. I detest the Chinese for raping this country like that. Its my passion . There are hundreds of snares around and nobody gives a damn. Therefor, thanks for your write. DO IT AGAIN hugs Jannie
