I Wish I Had Said It Back Then
I wish I had said I don’t want to go back,
But the judge had put down his pen;
The bed was stripped, my clothes were packed,
And the lady was waiting again;
I should have told them back then.
I wish I had told them of mother and gin;
I wish I had said it back then.
I wish I had said her reasons are false;
I wish I had told her of him;
Of his smile, of his hands, and his improper talk,
How cruel and oppressive he’d been.
I wish I had courage and said it back then:
I don’t want to go back, I’d rather stay here;
Life's hard when living in fear.
