I will not kneel again

On my knees
At the side of the bed
I pray to you while I bow my head

The fighting will stop
No more dead
But nobody answers because it's all in their head

They said give you money
So no one would starve
But hunger doesn't care about the words on a prayer card

You turned me away
Because I won't follow your lead
So now I know better than to get down on my knees

This is a powerful free-verse statement of spiritual disillusionment and self-possession. The recurring image of kneeling gives the poem a strong structural spine, while its plain, direct language makes the anger at unanswered prayer, war, hunger, and exclusion feel immediate and deeply personal. The final return to “get down on my knees” lands with particular force: it transforms a gesture of faith into a declaration of autonomy.
