These three innocuous words; "I was wrong," can numb the sting of emotional pain. But our egos balk at going along with sharing the blame; we are far too vain. We've convinced ourselves that we're always right, and it offends us to suggest we're not. Such arrogance often leads to a fight; stubborn hearts bear the scars of battles fought. We won't admit that we spoke out of place, it's inconceivable that we're at fault. And we will defend our lies, face to face, flanking the truth with a verbal assault. "I was wrong" gets replaced with "I love you;" pride sees no distinction between the two.

I understand what you're saying Emile, it's not saying you're wrong just to keep the peace, but rather facing the truth that sometimes we say or do things to hurt others, then an apology admitting one is wrong, is what helps mend the rift. A wise sonnet indeed!

I’m not sure Emile if saying “I was wrong” when believing I am right, is the right thing to do, it merely manipulates the other person, to replace it with, I love you, sounds more like a passive aggressive technique, surely a constructive dialogue is better, unless your afraid of the other persons violent response, in that case, it’s best not being together, cheers David

All the more reason for a constructive dialogue to get to the bottom of the issue, Emile, anyone that feels demeaned to be thought of as less than perfect has serious issues, a solipsist perhaps, and not the type of person I would want to be with, happy new year to you too, cheers David

Thanks David, I appreciate your comments, my poem highlights a generality of not accepting " I was wrong" because some people feel it demeans them to be thought of as less than perfect, therefore they believe "I am right" regardless if they are or not, Happy New Year my friend, Emile.
