I WAS ONCE LIKE YOU
Just because
My body is frail
My hair is thin and grey
My eyes don’t see very well
I can’t hear some words you say
My skin is wrinkled
My body aches
My memory is vague
My hands now shake
My teeth are few
I need support to walk
Confused at times
So, to myself I talk
You see me as an empty shell
Forget I was once like you
Independent, strong and able
With hopes and dreams to pursue
I loved and was loved
Knew the joy of family
Had highs and lows along the way
On this remarkable journey
Did things that I shouldn’t
Felt wild and free
Had many a secret
Many a story…..
I laughed a lot
Was confident and bold
Independent and knowing
Before I grew old…
My life was full
I was whole
Before the years took their toll
So when you next look at me
Don’t dismiss and look straight through
Remember I have lived a life
And I was once like you....
