I Was Here I Am I Sing

I walked on wet sand and left my mark
the ocean washed it smooth,
but something stayed,
the way love leaves its shape on everything it touches.

I scratched my name into the side of a tree.
Now the tree is growing around those letters,
making them part of its body,
part of its story.

Today,
I stand in sunlight streaming through my window.
Tiny pieces of dust float around my hands
like small worlds spinning in space.

The air I breathe was breathed by someone else before,
passed from lungs to lungs across the years.

I am made of borrowed things,
meals my mother cooked,
my father's steady voice,
books that changed the way I see,
hands that held mine when I was afraid.

All of it is still alive in me.

And I sing because I can,
because I'm here,
my voice a small flag waving in the wind,
saying yes to this,
one wild and precious day.
