I Once Dreamed a Dream

I once
dreamed a dream
about four blossoming roses.

As footprints trampled upon silent snow

one died from a chilling childhood,
frozen within dark chambers of the mind.
Aspirations disappeared with migrating nightingales.

As robins built their nests.

Jaded, one died from wondering
if you loved or not -
all that remained was a trail
of bleeding petals, silently decaying.

As baby birds called for their mothers.

One died from revealing its flaws to the sun,
who unfaithfully, confided with wayfaring winds,
who scattered suppressed secrets and shameful sins,
upon partisan meadows - its petals reduced to ashes.

As Autumn leaves descended upon rotten roses.

Last rose died from isolated heartache,
as raw rains refused to cease - there was no peace.
Bird boxes were empty, feeders full of seed.
Only thorns remained.

Body of my garden is now concrete,
no longer do roses bloom,
no longer do I dream.

Somewhere your dream came true but thankfully there are those who love the rose enough. A poem that is worthy of the name. Enjoyed the visit David in NZ

A very poignant piece and extremely well thought out. The comparisons are exceptional because the roses are of course human hearts broken through deep betrayal. Some people get tough and coarse through time and others wonder what makes them this way. I think it's things like this. Very insightful read. Well Done my silent friend. Well Done. God Bless, JB

I really enjoyed this one. I wish I had read it first, but my mind always goes to sonnets and iambic meter, which I love so much. I hope you like that I write different with sonnets. I like being different than other sonneteers!

Wow! Just fantastic as usual. And I'm wondering, "Which rose am I?" It doesn't matter but you will always be the reddest rose with the sweetest perfume which lasts forever through your wonderful poetry dear ZZ. FAVED of course.

You sure know how to make me weep for broken dreams that much the rose into the ground, I love all your writes. They peel away at our defences so softly but effectively, that time stands in silence. xo
