I Loved Him
I loved him when I was young
before I knew the ocean depths
I loved him with a heart brand new
no scars to mar me yet
I loved him with a clean, pure soul
no knowledge had I of sin
I loved him with my hair in braids
with such hope, how I loved him
I loved him when my breasts were proud
no dimness in my bright eyes
I loved him before my back was bowed
with the weary weight of secrets I hide
I still love him, yes, that much is true
yet my old bones are brittle and break
I will love him until the day I die
into a new life this love I take
