I Love Myself For This
I was taught not to love me.
I was to love everyone else.
Strangers even, but not myself.
It was drilled into my head in all possible directions.
The message was to let everyone else win.
To let them achieve, to encourage and uplift.
But not me, never me.
It was not to be.
It was not the way “we” do things.
When I became a mother, I decided to change the script.
I raised my children to love themselves.
I showed them how to give their brains positive self-talk.
I taught them what I had never been taught.
I raised three assertive women who love themselves.
They are not braggadocio.
They are not pompous or arrogant.
They are self-sufficient, hard-working and confident.
They respect themselves.
I love myself for this achievement.
