I lost him!

I lost my old friend—
the fear to live.

From as far back as I remember,
from the time I crawled,
from the time I brawled,
we woke each morning
and walked together,
like a shadow,
never apart.

He lived with me
all day long.
At night,
I slept beside him.

But now I realize
I lost my shadow somewhere.

Maybe he grew tired of me.
Maybe he found another.
Maybe he forgot me.
Or maybe
he is already dead.

Either way,
I lost him.

Now,
I live without fear.

I agree with Valsa, it took me until the end of the poem to get who you were lamenting, and then rejoicing over. Ahh sweet relief.

I thought initially that you were lamenting over the loss of a dear friend. Only towards the end, I knew you were referring to Fear that followed you like a shadow. I am sure, you feel so relieved with his death. Great personification.

Dear Jenish, I was struck by the way you personified fear as a lifelong companion and it makes the moment of “losing him” feel both liberating and strangely bittersweet. Freedom often comes not from conquering fear but from realizing it has quietly left us, and you captured that beautifully. Holiday, Blessings, Dear Jenish, Daniel
