I Guess I Am a Poet
A Gemini, I get bored faster than most people walk to their mailbox.
My hands are always moving- painting, cartooning, sewing, gardening.
One day I was stuck at work for eight hours, and no one wanted to see me.
I volunteered to join all conferences, but no one invited me. I am the counselor.
I was sitting in my office staring at my computer and this phrase hit me.
“Why don’t you try writing poetry?” I immediately looked up poetry sites online.
One that sounded user-friendly enticed me, I ran out to my car and got my credit card.
I paid for six months and wrote a poem. It was fun putting it up on the page.
Someone commented, so I put up another poem, and another poem and another poem.
By the end of the night I had posted eight poems, and I was commenting too.
It was like having pen pals all over the world and they were responding to my stuff.
I discovered poetry types that night at home and began trying sonnets and diminished hexes.
Within a month I had tried limericks, ninettes, nonettes,
haiku, haibun, and other types.
The site was filled with nice people who were upbeat and positive
And way too polite to let me know that most of what I was writing was prose.
I did not figure this out for months, but by then it was too late. So, I guess I am a poet.
