I Grew Up Poor

I grew up POOR
How poor? You may ask

We were so poor
We couldn't pay attention
Now, that's poor

We were so poor
We made "white trash"
Look like middle class

We were so poor
We adopted a church mouse
And he ran away

We were so poor
We kids had to take turns
Chewing a piece of gum

Were so poor
We couldn't live in the country
We had to live in the woods

And I remember once
When we were ashamed
To show our face in town
'Cause Pa got drunk
And burned the outhouse down

It's a good thing being poor
Isn't a crime,
Or my whole family
Would still be in jail

(Wonder if they have gum)
