I Conquered a Mountain

We met one gloomy, fateful day.
We stood face-to-face, mountain and I.
We both refused to make way.
We sized each other up, then...
We began to battle, for it blocked my path.
We waged war; it was my greatest adversary!
I kept sliding down, but never gave up the ascent.
I climbed up, and up, and up, and up, until...
I was at the top of the world!
I made it! I won.
I didn't give up when the going got tough.
I still bear the wears and tears of the climb.

Note: Strangely enough, the inspiration for this poem came from watching an old movie called "White Heat"; specifically at the end where James Cagney's character goes..."Made it, Ma! Top of the world!"
