I Cannot Forget

I CANNOT FORGET

Forgetting is hard to do
When my mind constantly searches
Its recesses for images of you

I want to forget
But never will
I need to forget
But won’t willingly
I must forget
But that is unlikely

My sanity ever so fragile
Hinges on you being a fading memory
A path once travelled
But now too arduous to bear

Swamping my psyche
And filling me with despair
My wounds are deep and sore
And will never heal

What we had failed
It was not meant to be
We both must release ourselves
From this gnawing misery
