I Believed

I believed politicians were elected to protect our Constitution
         But I was wrong.

I believed we welcome all immigrants
        But I was wrong.

I believed our Presidents were elected to protect all our citizens
        But I was wrong.

I believed when we work hard all our lives we would retire with dignity
        But I was wrong.

I believed our country was the envy of the world.
        But I was wrong.

I believed our soldiers would be rewarded and treaded like heroes
        But I was wrong.

I believed our military was to protect us against outside aggression
        But I was wrong.

I believed the military would never hurt our citizens
        But I was wrong.

I believed we would elect a criminal President
        But I was wrong.

I don’t know what i will tell my children what happen to our
beloved country.

These are tough, disillusioning times. I thought I was disillusioned before, but things seem to get worse.

Lunita, it is a very sad what has happened in the USA, your poem I am sure expresses how many in the USA feel. I am Canadian and we feel the pain of high tariffs on our country. Well written
