I am Mine

I am his.
His gnarled hands around my throat.
Grasping,
shaking,
pulling me towards him.
I will forever be his.
The screaming is drowned out only by the ringing in my ears,
like bees buzzing in my brain.
I am his.
as the air leaves my lungs,
I am pulled.
not by him,
by something deep within me.
Fight or flight?
Fight or flight?
For the first time,
I chose to fight.
I push,
as hard as my small,
frail,
oxygen depleted body could manage,
 I push.
As he falls,
slamming into the old oak dresser behind him,
I am sure-
I AM MINE.

Thanks for sharing this... exposing your thoughts through your unique poetic style. Welcome to Poetry Soup. I welcome you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." I have written many a poem about my experience with assault and sexual assault and the effects that it has had on me and my mental state, but never have I written one so concise and easily conformable to any persons experience with abuse. This poem you wrote is truly amazing. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who has turned to poetry as a kind of therapy when it comes to my past with assault. I knew before that I wasn't, but it feels tangible now, like I know someone personally.

thank you so much! the purpose of writing it was not only for my own healing, but to hopefully show the reader that they are not alone in their experience of sexual assault. thank you for your kind words
