I Am

I am not here to comfort you My heart lies cold and dead And all the love it held for you Washed away by the tears I have shed It is not because I've lived my life In a way that kept me free Nor for the many times I've been Without your company It is sad you never learned to love To give your heart away To be the flame for some mad soul And turn their night to day Every year, when you were here Your silence was my grief And when the new sun rose in me You watched in disbelief I only need myself to thrive To live a life carefree And in the end, when blessings cease I will live whatever is left in me For all the guilt that left you blind You still refuse to see It's nothing more than forgotten lore For now, my heart is free

Hi Francis, your poem is a powerful reflection on emotional detachment, the pain of a relationship marked by neglect, and the ultimate triumph of self-reliance and personal freedom. It eloquently captures your journey from grief to liberation, using imagery and tone to emphasize the complexity of moving on from a broken emotional connection.

Hello Silent One, I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your comments, and especially for this poem. It was written over many months. I assembled much of the poem from bits and pieces of unfinished work in my notebook. Perhaps each piece was a failed attempt to bring out the thoughts and feelings you have expressed in your review. "I Am" brought together these scattered bits of poetry.
