Hurt You

I love you with all my heart
I don't know why I hurt you
The harder I try to show my love
Your heart ends up broken in two

I overthink every word and twist it
Until it resembles nothing that was said
A flash of aggravation on your face
Turns into days I'm stuck in my head

As I'm thinking my imagination runs wild
I wish my mind would leave it alone
I replay each word I spoke to you
As well as my body language and tone

And I have these thoughts in my head
They have nothing to do with you and I
But they have me so upset I'm yelling
And both of us hurt as you begin to cry

You should not be a target of my anger
And I should never treat you so unkind
It's not you I'm mad at or upset with
It's the make believe in my mind

A raw, deeply honest poem about the painful gap between loving intentions and the harm caused by spiralling thoughts and anger. The clear, direct voice makes the speaker’s remorse feel especially genuine, while the closing “make believe in my mind” powerfully identifies the inner struggle at the heart of the conflict.
