Hunting
today the day is hunting me.
watching me walk into its
thinly disguised trap,
such an unexpected happenstance
that happiness happens by chance.
don't stare too long
or it will take you, too.
i wanted to sit in some
wet grass
& i wanted into the closed
computer lab
& i wanted to buy an out-of-print
bukowski at the library
& to the guy who dropped
the ceramic mess, running away
i wanted to say
"you dumb *******, you almost broke it!"
but he hides better than i
& i'd only find myself
betrayed,
lying in the face
of some rooster crowing
yesterday's success
in killing & dying
& lying on a tray waiting
for something to come spilling out,
everything dropped & ran away from
& sewn up empty i might manage
to drop my own,
run away & hide inside myself
until the next day's crowing
comes calling another name
i've known.
