Human Rights Charter For Australian Aborigines By Oodgeroo Noonuccal

Nous voulons la liberté, pas de frustration ;
Encouragement, pas d’interdictions ;
couleur ;
Soyez gentille avec nous, ne montrez pas le préjugé d’un bigot ;
Laissez-nous sentir ambitieux sans interdiction,
La confiance et ne pas la condescendance ;
Faites de nous vos voisins, pas d’habitants de bidonvilles ;

(Note : In 1788, the first white settlers set foot on Australian soil after James Cook’s maiden voyage of « discovery » in 1770. The aboriginal peoples were allowed citizenship and voting rights only in 1967, three years after the publication of Oodgeroo’s first volume of poems.)

Translation of Aboriginal Charter of Rights by Oodgeroo Noonuccal
The Charter of Human Rights for Aborigines - Translation of Oodgeroo Noonuccal's Aboriginal Charter of Rights by T. Wignesan
We need hope, not racism, fraternity, not ostracism
Progress for blacks, not the uplift of whites:
Make us equals, not those who depend on you.
We need assistance, not exploitation,
We want freedom, not frustration;
Not control but self-confidence,
Independence, not obedience
Not neglect if not education,
Respect for oneself, not resignation
Free us from abject submission,
From bureaucratic protection.
We are going to forget about the slaveholders of yesteryear.
Give us camaraderie, not favours,
Encouragement, not prohibitions;
Homes, not cantonments and proselytizing camps.
We need love, not authoritarian surveillance,
Let us shake hands, not be whipped by our masters,
The opportunity that puts whites and blacks on an equal basis.
You suppress us, you leave us unprotected,
You outlaw us instead of treating us like friends.
Make us feel welcome, not with contempt,
Give us the right to choose, not cold coercion,
A dignified status, not discrimination,
Human rights, not segregation.
You embody the Law as the Roman Pontius,
Make us proud, not aware of our colour;
Give us back what belongs to us which you had misappropriated
Be kind to us, do not show the prejudice of a bigot;
Let us feel ambitious without prohibition, trust, not condescension;
Grant us the right to take the initiative, no restrictions,
Give us Christ, not the crucifixion.
Although baptized and blessed and indoctrinated with the Bible
We are still the object of taboos and defamation.
You the pious sellers of salvation,
Make us your neighbours, not slum dwellers;
Make us your buddies, not underprivileged relatives,
Citizens not slaves on plantations.
Should we the original people of Australia count among strangers/foreigners in our own land?
By abolishing all restrictions and destroying the rigours (of the system) of caste That we will be able to win what belongs to us by right.
