How Many Poets Did I Know Growing Up

How many poets did I know growing up I knew doctors, lawyers and bricklayers Teachers, bookkeepers, naysayers Local politicians and crossing guards ‘Handicapped’ people, we called them ‘retards’ I knew the guy who drove the ice cream truck A professional gambler who was quick with a buck I even knew a minister, rabbi, and priest People from the coast, the south, and the Middle East But I never knew a poet growing up Seems that most were old or deceased

Ahah! You had a questionable ice cream man also! :D I was the only poet I knew when I was little, but I seem to remember reading Anna Laetitia Barbauld's poem "Life!" and thinking it quite profound.

There was a poet, Robert Depew in my high school class who was a published poet. We always made fun of him.

Whoa. Pretty unusual that Robert Depew. Understandable that his peers made fun of him in high school... We had a musical group of 'long-hairs' that had a record in the 'Top 40.' They were expelled for their hair. 1965, if I remember correctly.

I knew famous wriers in Chicago and other cities, after I was 19…. The Bible, you grew up with, has poetry,.. of course we never met the aithors. Growing up in the Vatholic faith, long ado, was much musi whicjH was little and said in Latin. But we knew Latin then.. now it’s more like a hoot nanny and church. Gregorian Chant went out the window. Anyway, Gershon, those were days.very beautiful. Huggs, Pangie xxx

an accurate statement from my growing years as well. The only poets I knew were the ones inside the books....even as a child I thought they were 'weird' in an insightful way...and I wondered how they got that way :-) Now I know...it's called 'life's experiences and insight.' Creativity helps too :-) smiles, Sara

Poetry to me was anathema until about age 40 or so. I was into football then. Now football is anathema to me, unlike poetry. ~ Whirled Turned
